AN ANCIENT SACRIFICE

During my stay in the West Bank, I had the opportunity to be introduced to the Samaritan community located on Mount Gerizim, one of the two mountains in the Nablus area. This religious group considers itself to be among the true descendants of the first Israelite tribes and considers their rituals to be the original ones that all Jews should observe. The Samaritans consider Mount Gerizim as the one designated by God for the construction of the Temple because it was here as it was there that the sacrifice that Abraham was supposed to perform with his son Isaac was staged, while the Jews consider Mount Mo- riah the Holy mountain where this event occurred, where the two Temples were actually built. Kiryat Luza, a village located on Mount Gerizim's ridge,is where the Samaritan community, consisting of roughly 800 members, gath- ers to pray and commemorate their liberation from slavery in Egypt on the eve of each Passover. Men dressed in white gowns carry at least 50 lambs to be sacrificed simultaneously, while pits with refractory stones are lit with olive wood, where they will be cooked. The most frenetic moment is the covering of the pits after the insertion of the meat, generating a lot of smoke, and the whole process must be carried out in a fast and coordinated action. Subse- quently, the sacred meat is served after midnight with aromatic herbs.
